The National Electrical Code (NEC) requires a whole-home surge protector for new home construction as of 2020. The code requires either a Type 1 or Type 2 surge protection device (SPD). There are three levels for the purposes of residential electrical systems, and we advise layering for the best protection.
If the construction of your house predates 2020 and you don’t have an SPD at all, we recommend that upgrade. A Type 2 SPD is the device most homeowners associate with whole-house surge protection. We install it between the electrical panel and the rest of the home’s electrical system. It protects against lighting but also any electrical anomalies that originate within the household.
For more robust protection, we recommend pairing the Type 2 with a Type 1 SPD. We’ll install a Type 1 SPD between the grid and your electrical panel. It provides further protection against lightning. It also protects against bad power from the grid. That isn’t something your electric company is generally responsible for.
A Type 3 SPD is local protection and the last line of defense. A surge protector power strip is a common example of a Type 3 SPD. You generally don’t need an electrician for those. That said, we do offer upgrades like outlets with integrated surge protectors. Those free up space in areas where you don’t need power strips and similar accessories.
The benefits of a whole-house surge protector include:
Fire prevention
Safeguard against data loss
Reduce insurance premiums
Lower long-term electrical system costs
Protect expensive appliances and devices
